Pros and Cons of a Third Party

Richard Salbato

Recently I wrote an article encouraging Sarah Palin to start now running for President of the United States and work hard in the next 18 months supporting conservative candidates for the house and senate - Democratic, Independent, or Republican.

I went on to offer my suggestions of what the primary issues should be to attract the conservative and centrist voter. Like “the contract with America” during the Clinton Presidency, we also need to show and educated people what real solutions would be like.  Sarah Palin for (Independent) President

At the same time, I think she should stay away from the Republican Party for now, because her great support is going to come from economic conservatives, who are not happy with the Republican Party right now.  Although Republican Senators and Congressmen are doing better since the election, they did not do so in the past, where they were just as irresponsible as Democrats. Because she draw such great crowds, she should help the true economic conservatives, no matter what party.

Cons of Third Parties

I do not believe in real third parties unless - ?????  The third party of Ross Perot cost the election to go to the Democrats because he split the conservative vote.  This is the biggest reason for not having a third party and I agree.  What Ross Perot should have done is to watch the poles and when he saw that he could not win, he should have pulled out and gave his support to the next most conservative candidate.  He did not and this was very costly.

In nations were they have a many party system, coalitions have to be formed for anyone to be elected, and in some cases, like Italy, Christian Democrats have to compromise with Socialists or even Communists to gain power.  These coalitions can result in a do nothing government, or at least a watered down government, and they simply do not work.

In America, even though many people can run for office at the same time, we have an Electoral College, and this eliminates coalitions.  When no one has a 51% vote, the Electoral College keeps voting until someone does.  As a result weak third parties never do much.  The leading candidate always ends up with the other party’s votes, in the second, third or forth votes.

Truthfully the founding fathers of our government did not want political parties, and Washington did not belong to any.  However they split into Federalists, who wanted a strong central government and the Anti-Federalists who wanted strong states rights, and it has stayed this way every since, but with different names.

The liberals

The strong central government party was first called the Federalists, then Democrats, then Liberty Party, then Whigs, then Democrats again, then Progressive Party (socialist), then Democrats again, although the first Democratic Presidents of the 20th Century were really Progressive Democrats.

The conservatives

The Republicans wanted states rights and a small central government and they were the Whigs, the Free Soil Party (against slavery), the American Party, and finally the Republicans with Abraham Lincoln. When Lincoln ran for office, there were four major parties because the Democrats split into Northern and Southern Democrats. Lincoln got the majority of the vote, both electoral and popular, but only 38%.  As a result he was not elected until the third Electoral Vote.

Essentially the two party system has somewhat remained for or against a strong federal government.

Pros of a Third Party

What happens if both parties migrate towards the center to the point we have no difference between Democrats and Republicans?  Although Republicans in congress are today becoming more conservative, before the last election, I could not tell the difference between them and the Democrats- in economics.

This is exactly what the masses are saying in the Tea Parties.  They do not even allow politicians to come and speak.

The only real good reasons for a third party are to eliminate one of the two parties or to force them back to their roots.  However, if you only split the vote, you must drop out before you give the enemy an advantage.

The reason I want Sarah Palin to start now, running as an Independent for President, is so that she can avoid the inside politics of the Republican Party, pull the party back to conservative values and gather the power of the people, who right now are disillusioned with both parties.

If you know how parties work, you know that some states have caucus votes and not primary votes.  Politicians have to cater to these people behind closed doors and we do not know what they promise to these people.  The rest of the states have primaries that force the representatives in the Conventions to vote for the person with the most votes on the first ballot, but after that they can change their vote.

In the last Republican Primaries for congress and the president, it was the consensus that they needed to move more to the center in order to be elected and this is why they nominated McCain, and lost everything: the presidency, the house and the senate.

Right now, I want to see if the Republicans have learned their lesson, before I will support any of them.  I fear many are becoming Libertarian and this is conservatism in the extreme.  If, however, we let all parties know we can go on without them, they may come back to their roots, and we can re-join them.  If not, we can get rid of them and form a real party that has the contrast that we can believe in.  In the mean time, I think Sarah Palin needs to remain outside the parties until she sees what way they are going.

As I have already stated: “If you believe in her traditional conservative values, join in with her friends by signing up and supporting them.”

Note:

To this date only 64 congressmen out of 564 signed a pledge to read the Health Care bill and post it on the internet for us to read before signing it.  If you think we have a representative government, you are blind.  Read their names and if they will not even read what they sign, why should you vote for them.  Now that we have the internet, we can tell them what we think everyday of their stupidity.
